Pregame Write-Ups from The Spyglass...
(#1) Como Park vs. (#3) Texas
Both squads escaped the divisional playoffs despite sloppy coaching with mucho
points left on the sidelines. The Pongos have been trying to play the underdog
role, but nobody's buying it. They are still the reigning champs and as dangerous
as ever considering their historical dominance over the Showboats, especially
in the postseason. You've got to figure they'll deliver a heavy dose of SA, and
Shockey is probably a lock to start, but beyond that there are some question marks.
Does Big Ben earn another starting nod with his perfomance last week? Do they
opt for a double TE set or a single-back set? Perhaps a free agent is thrust into
the line-up as the Pongos do have a history of making shrewd postseason acquisitions.
For the Showboats, it's the Johnson & Johnson show. LJ has been a beast since
taking over as the starter; and after a slow start, Rudi has turned into a monster.
(Who put what into his Wheaties a few weeks ago?) Everything else is an Achilles'
heel for the 'Boats right now (Dillon vs. Foster, the kicking game, QB, the WR
corps). The Showboats are counting on a solid game from Trent and for DJax to
inspire the WRs.
(#1) Edina vs. (#2) Nord'east
Edina cruised through the regular season on the strength of Manning, James, and
Stephen Davis. Now Davis is on the shelf and both Manning and James figure to
be pulled early against the Seahawks. Delhomme appears to be a reasonable replacement
for Manning, but James' spot may be tougher to fill. The fullbacks on the roster
have potential but are hit or miss and may not be any better than 3 quarters or
even a half for James. Throughout the season, the Robber Barons have shown a knack
for starting the right WR at the right time—they'll need more of that magic
this week. Nord'east, on the other hand, appeared to be limping into the postseason
with Eli at the helm, but Steve Smith re-emerged at just the right time and Ryan
Moats breathed life into an RB group that had lost its way. Jamal Lewis had fallen
so far out of favor that he wasn't even selected for the reserves list in the
first-round playoff game. With his big performance Monday night, RB depth appears
to be a strength again and the only question is whether to stick with Wayne or
roll the dice with a wild card WR (either on or off roster) to pair up with Smith.
In the end, this one may come down to which stud-K has a bigger game: Kaeding
or Graham.

SCORING LEADERS
They have been updated and should be the final numbers for the season. We will
continue to add playoff points to the chart, but position and player totals are
frozen.
The Pipers strangled the #1 draft pick like an 18th century chicken farmer's wife.
The Apocalypse dropped below three nonplayoff teams. The Speed rocket up the charts
for a weaker draft position. Alexander, Manning (Peyton), Smith (Steve), and Graham
sit atop their respective positions scoring lists. The Colts D was vastly improved
but couldn't help the Pipers win games. Same for the Gryffindors and their Bears.

IR RULE - SLIGHT LANGUAGE CHANGE
The owner of the Loeb Lakers (and co-commissioner) made a terrific discovery and
shared it with the San Francisco home office in an e-mail this morning:
"Ever since I noticed that little-used WRs (like my own Taylor, Jamaar-Giants)
may be "hiding" in special teams, I checked the current IR players against the
official roster site on NFL.com. It tells you if the player played even if he
didn't catch a ball (i.e., special teams)."
This is a great feature of NFL.com. It should help to sort out two of the more
troubling aspects of following IR-tagged players: 1) "Questionable" status and
2) No official IR status for players injured in training camp or early in the
year but who do not touch the ball enough to register anywhere. Our current rule
states:
"In cases in which a player did not run, catch, or throw a football during the
prior week, being listed as questionable is also considered enough to be placed
on IR. Players listed as questionable who were involved in the offense during
the prior week are not eligible for IR, even if they left the game early."
Thanks to NFL.com and their improved tracking of player involvement in a game,
whether or not they ran, caught, or threw a football, we can now ammend this WTFFL
Rule Book paragraph to read:
"In cases in which a player did not play during the prior week, being listed as
questionable is also considered enough to be placed on IR. Players listed as questionable
who were involved in the offense during the prior week are not eligible for IR,
even if they left the game early."
This will be an immediate adjustment unless the Rules Committee disagrees. It
is not anticipated that they will. Better available information equals less guesswork.
Like the Lakers owner said, it's often hard to determine the status of guys like
Jamaar Taylor until they run into a big glub like Mike Tice. Now we have an NFL-sanctioned
tool at our disposal to track down these fellas.

YOU'LL GET THERE (The Bunnies Hope Award)
Now that Front has finally made it to the Whale Bowl (and is an early favorite
for next year), there are only two franchises that have yet to be in the final
game of the season: the Centerville Communists and the Highland Park Apocalypse.
The Communists began as the Cottage Grove Flowers in 1992 and changed the team
name to the Pooh Bears in their second week of existence. After that first, turbulent
season, ownership switched hands to Jannosh "Johnny" Aranyos in 1993, and the
franchise was renamed the North End Confederates. There was a short move to Roseville
in 1995 followed by four more years in St. Paul's North End under the new name
of Communists. The team moved again to Centerville in 1999 and enjoyed their best
season ever in 2003.
The Apocalypse began as the Madison Baldcats in 1991, moved to Arlington Heights
in 1992 where the team name was changed to the Cranky Rottweilers. In 1993, the
franchise name went to Little Canada with a new coach, Christine Rein, but she
put a new stamp on the team in 1994 as the Highland Park Apocalypse. Times have
been tough since, but Highland Park has one thing Centerville does not: a final-four
appearance.

SCORING TITLE
The Como Park Pongos win their second ever scoring title on the strength of an
incredible evening of Drew Bennett highlights. For old time's sake, I hope the

want or say "no preference"). There's no guarantee anyone will listen but the

limit of 12 healthy players. If you have a problem with this, speak up, but I'm

IR ELIGIBILITY REMINDER
If a guy touches the ball in the week prior, he is NOT eligible for IR
the following week if he is listed as Questionable.
Let's look at a Lions example: Kevin Jones is IR, Roy Williams is not,
even though they are both on the Q. Jones didn't play, Williams did. Our
IR lists would be that much bulkier if we allowed all Questionable players
to be IR. We created the "week before" clause to reduce our IR numbers and to
better reflect the actual playing status of many Questionable players.
It all comes back to Steve McNair.
If it's any consolation, the term "touches the ball" is worth paying careful attention
to. A guy can play in a game and not get a catch, run, or throw and be considered
IR the following week from the Questionable list. This is supposed to account
for guys that suit up and get in on the first series or so and find that they
can't really do it.
Probable players are always NOT eligible for IR. Out and Doubtful
players ARE always eligible for IR.
If you have further questions, contact a league officer. The IR rules shouldn't
be a surprise to anyone at this point. We've been going like this with some amount
of success for more than a year now. It's working well to keep our rosters trim
and IR reporting abuses (whether by NFL or WTFFL coaches) to a near impossibility.
Some situations will seem unfair, but more often than not, it works out.
If you believe that a guy is a true IR case despite his paltry Questionable
listing, send a story that proves your player will not be playing or simply take
the fine. As long as you don't make too much of a habit of taking fines, it is
a reasonable tactic for some scenarios (e.g., Highland Park's extended kicker
tryout).

ALL-STAR GAME
After the Whale Bowl, we're still not quite done with competition, as the U and
V play each other in the annual all-star game. One guy or defense from each WTFFL
team chosen based on how many points the coach expects them to score throughout
the NFL playoffs. It's a tough task and beer money for next year's draft depends
on it.
Tricky thing is, I can never remember who the coach is. I think it's the Whale
Bowl reps, but I'm also starting to think that going to the Whale Bowl might be
honor enough. For now, that's still the call, but John suggested maybe we go with
the U and V runner-ups like they do in the NFL Pro Bowl.
Further, we could go with a random roll of the 8-sided dice. The D&D geek in me
kinda likes that option. I'm looking for any outstanding opinions, and I'm not
into change for the sake of change. I'm just into spreading the wealth whenever
possible.

McCARDELL DISCUSSION - DEFENSIVE SCORE?
In case any of you were wondering, we do not treat fumble returns by offensive
players as defensive points. Here's why...
The offensive unit is still on the field and should be treated as such until the
play is over. If you have happen to have Keenan McCardell and the Bucs D, you
could get 12 points for the same touchdown. Our rules have been written to
avoid this for special teams play and for guys like Deion Sanders. It creates
a dangerous precedent (well, not dangerous, really, but daunting at least). We
don't ever want the same score to go to two places, no matter how rare the occurrence.
The closest statement we have in the Rule Book is the one that says a defensive
score shall be awarded to the D and not to an individual player. If we applied
this to the McCardell play, McCardell would not get the points. The players are
the blood of our league, so we try to encourage scores being applied to them over
team defense.
This was not an unprecedented incident. We have had guys score on offensive fumble
returns. A running back will drop the ball, some defensive guy will pick it up,
he'll drop the ball, and someone else on the offensive squad will pick it up and
run it in. The NFL boxscore will indicate a fumble return. We have traditionally
treated this as an offensive TD. Marty recalled an incident a few weeks back involving
the Ravens. My state recalled a governor.

RULE CHANGES AND AMENDMENTS
It is now mandatory to drop down to 12 healthy players by Thursday midnight. We
have finally eliminated the "in a timely manner" wishy wash. You DO NOT
have to drop guys on the Sunday of the week of your new pickups. You get to try
them out and see how they do. You have until Thursday to get within the 12-man
boundary again of face fines. It has been determined that this tryout period doesn't
hurt any of the other league members, because all the excess will be back in the
bidding pool before Friday, giving everyone at least two full days to assess anything
thrown back in the mix.
Being over the limit gets a $2/player fine with fines doubling in each successive
week (e.g., if you are two players over the limit, on the second week, your fines
are $8 for that week for a total of $12 over two weeks).
If you still do not understand rules regarding Injured Reserve, please let me
or Laci know. So far this season, I would say that everything has been done according
to existing rules. You are telling me when you want to put a guy on IR, and in
just about every case, it has made perfect sense by our IR standards. For very
obvious IR news, I don't bother to wait for you to tell me you want to put a guy
on IR. These cases include guys like Marshall Faulk, Joe Jurevicius, and Chad
Pennington. I can imagine that there may still be questions about "questionable,"
but it's as simple as this: If your guy is listed as questionable, you can only
put him on IR after he has sat out a complete game. I'm tempted to call
this the Steve McNair Rule, because he's a guy that practically lives on the questionable
list but still manages to put up Pro Bowl numbers.
There seems to be one nagging question about IR and that is whether or not you
can start guys that are listed on the Rosters PDF sheet as "(IR)." Yes, you can
under what we're calling the Bulger Amendment.
Bulger Amendment:
If you start a player designated with an IR tag when you have at least 13 players
(including both healthy and IR) on your roster, you MUST immediately remove the
IR designation and drop to the proper number of players to assure a maximum of
12 healthy players.
Our strict IR eligibility requirements should be enough to help keep these instances
to a minimum. "Doubtful" guys are rarely upgraded to game-time decisions between
Thursday's NFL injury report and Sunday's kickoff. But I believe we must leave
room for this to happen. Let's say Culpepper is listed as doubtful (i.e., eligible
for IR) on Thursday and is upgraded on Saturday to eligible for play and at noon
on Sunday to starter. I don't want a scenario where he can't be used in the game
because of some label from three days earlier. He should be allowed to play. The
Bulger Amendment will be the answer to this occasional quandary.
Our existing Rulebook currently states something to the effect of "If the FF team
puts a player on IR they CANNOT start him." It's true that the Rulebook wording
could be interpreted in this erroneous way, so it will be made easier to understand.
I share with you what our founding Rulebook author had in mind when he created
the IR language a decade ago:
JOHN (as stated on 12-18-02): "I always intended the IR language to mean
that you'd better drop somebody if the 'IR' guy you are starting puts your roster
at 13+.
John added some comments last week that forced the Rules Committee to add further
polish to our understanding of the Rulebook and forced me to think of a couple
of scenarios to share with you here because I'm psycho-crazy about building a
full understanding of our cool-ass system.
JOHN (as stated last week):
"...leave the door open for someone to be able to make an early Sunday drop in
order to start a Questionable player who was on IR on Thursday but the "game-time
decision" indicated he would play."
This one's interesting, because there are actually two ways this could go in terms
of drops:
SCENARIO ONE:
You win bids on two healthy, eligible players and now your roster is at 13 healthy
and 1 IR at noon on Sunday. You learn that your IR guy is going to start for his
NFL team; you start him for your WTFFL team. You need not drop anyone because
you were at 11 healthy players before the news your IR guy was playing. The two
new purchases are still in "tryout" mode and don't need to be dropped until Thursday
at midnight.
SCENARIO TWO:
You make no bids, you have 12 healthy players and 1 IR. You learn 15 minutes before
kickoff that the IR guy is going to start. You choose to start him, which means
you MUST drop a guy on the spot since you're now carrying 13 healthy, veteran
players.

REALIGNMENT
You may recall that there was some discussion of realignment at the draft. The
move would involve Oregon and Napa Valley moving to the Cetacean Division and
White Bear and Highland Park moving up to the 4D. There were several interesting
reasons to do this, but after all is said and done, I think we're better off just
leaving things the way they are. We would be breaking up some interesting, evolving
rivalries, and I'm not real into toying with what seems to be working.
There was some concern over a Hamline/Highland Park final or a Napa Valley/San
Francisco final putting all the marbles in one household, but I honestly don't
think this should be a worry. Think of it like Giants/Jets, Yankees/Mets, White
Sox/Cubs, Giants/A's, Angels/Dodgers...

OFFSEASON
LIMIT
Our season is over, so the IR slate is now wiped clean. We all must be
down to 12 players (no exceptions) by the Pro Bowl (extended while harassment
of the last couple of owners who have not yet complied continues; they better
hope no free-agent moves go down while I'm waiting). The penalty is severe
for infractions, and we will give you every opportunity not to be penalized. You
will lose your first-round draft pick! There has been a lot
of talk of roster fairness as we approach the draft. This should take care of
arguments for a bit. Thank John for the rule change. He's crazier than I am.
