Jackalopes (1). We were all supposed to be at 16 players or less on Draft Day. However, you are allowed to make bids that might take you over 16 players, just as you're able to do during the season.

VOTE ON A SCORING CHANGE
There was one order of business that we forgot to discuss at the draft, so we'll try to quickly wrap this up before kickoff. It's about a potential scoring change. Performance points have always been 3 per 100 yards rushing/receiving and 300 yards passing (with 3 more for each 100 after 300). A new system is on the table to give 1 point for every 25 yards after 100 for runners and receivers, thus:

100 = 3 points
125 = 4 points
150 = 5 points
175 = 6 points
200 = 7 points

and for QBs:

300 = 3 points
325 = 4 points
350 = 5 points
375 = 6 points
400 = 7 points

Laci went so far as to figure out incidence. He broke down some of the numbers for these new bonus points. On average, only 3 RBs get to the 125+ bonus per week. For QBs, it's 2 per week that throw for 325+. More breakdown (I believe just for RBs):

100 = 3 points
125 = 4 points (32 times last year)
150 = 5 points (10 times last year)
175 = 6 points (5 times last year)
200 = 7 points (3 times last year)

The argument for this change is to inject something fun and new that gives more points for additional awesomeness. It allows the players who get the yards to also get the proper recognition when it seems like little-used backup tight ends and 1-yard specialists get the glory.

The argument against this change says that a guy like Mike Sellers needs to have decent fantasy value in a league as deep as our. This value is lessened when more points are awarded to a few feature players who already dominate our scoring leaders (e.g., Brady, Owens, Tomlinson). The question is asked: What is the merit of giving more points to players that are likely already rich in point totals by comparison to other players?

NEW TEAMS
The Midway Monsters have had a change of heart after a weekend of talking to fans at Porky's on University Avenue. It seems that guys who like to work on their '57 Chevys in their spare time, which is the primary fan base of the Midway team, prefer the whimsy of the Munsters to Monsters. And thus we'll be welcoming the Midway Munsters and their Grandpa Munster head logo to the league. I kinda dig it.

The other double-M team, the Mississippi Mudslingers (so named because of their home stadium along the Mississippi River in Champlin) has yet to submit a logo. The league office will be checking with the ownership spousal unit for ideas.

UPDATE
Roster and Availables are now updated through August 13. Drafted rookies through the 6th round of the NFL draft have been added to the RAS file as a separate sheet and have been integrated into the Availables. I want to do some more team-by-team depth charting before I call it completely current. I finally found a worthwhile replacement for the formerly free (and awesome) Ourlads Scouting Service. If you see anything that is terribly off at this point, drop me a line.

NEW TEAM NAMES
We have a couple of name changes this year in addition to the two new teams. The Front Bunnies are now the Merriam Park Fighting Jackalope and the Twin Cities Speed will claim the league's hometown team name of Saint Paul, which has been vacant for a couple of years. The only difference is that Saint Paul will always be spelled out for the Speed, as opposed to past St. Paul incarnations (Steiners, Lightning, Gryffindors). With a Whale Bowl championship in hand, Dale Street left its humble beginnings on Dale Street for a larger venue, but it has been confirmed that there will be no team name change this year. Any others?

You're welcome to arrive early but please no earlier than 11:00 a.m. We're going to be set up to party well after the draft, and I encourage you to invite others for the post-draft festivities. This is something of a coming out party for my house, my marriage, and the league's return to its roots in our 24th year. By a wonderful twist of fate, the first ever WTFFL champion lived at 445 Hatch Ave during our inaugural year.

The Nord'east Screaming Eagles are now the Mississippi Mudslingers, owned and coached by Todd Milburn, a good friend to the owners of the Lightning and Communists, the husband of my boss lady, and a Como Park alum. The Minneapolis Robber Barons are now the Midway Monsters, owned and coached by Greg Davenport, a good friend to the owner of the Buzz, a former swimming rival of the Lakers, and a St. Paul Central alum. We're excited to add some new guys, and we look forward to what they have to offer the league.

Maroney scored an early TD and it was starting to look like the V would run away with the game, especially with Brady spending a lot of time on his back. However, the Patriots game plan kept the U in it by stubbornly staying with the spread formation leading to a lot of Welker catches. The Brady-to-Moss TD connection on the final Patriots scoring drive finally sunk the U. With the extra point, the play resulted in a 4-point swing in favor of the V and gave the conference an All-Star victory after losing three out of the last four.

(#2) Dale Street Stonecutters vs. (#4) Hamline Pipers
Dale Street survived two straight scratch-and-claw battles against a tough division rival to get to the U Championship game. Now, the Stonecutters need both TO and TJ to snap out of their mini-slumps if they want to make it to the promised land. They would also appreciate it if Braylon Edwards didn't have to play in a blizzard this week. The Dale Street runners, Portis and Jones, haven't always been consistent, but they have come through in the clutch. David Garrard has turned early season 0s and 3s into 6s and 9s and appears to give the Stonecutters reliable production out of the QB position. Dale Street will face a Hamline team that shocked the world by knocking off the undefeated Roseville Lighting. Who the fuck knows what kind of squad the Pipers will send to the U Conference Championship game? Maybe they will retool the roster again. Maybe they will stick with Kitna, Stecker, and Mason, who performed well in their first-round playoff game. Calvin Johnson has shown the shakiness one would expect out of a rookie WR, but he figures to be a lock for the starting lineup. Other wild cards on the Piper roster include Ron Dayne, Julius Jones, Kevin Faulk, Kevin Curtis, and even a potential return of Reggie Bush. Honestly, the Pipers appear likely to put up a single-digit peformance, but they could also very well score 40+. It's sure to be a wild and surprising ride in the U.

V CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
(#1) Minneapolis Robber Barons vs. (#2) White Bear Alley Cats
There were no surprises in the V as it's #1 vs. #2. Both of these division winners sputtered in the opening round of the playoffs. Expect Manning & Moss and Romo & Addai to have better performances this week. Neither team should have an advantage in the kicking game as both Shayne Graham and Phil Dawson are playing on the same field in Cincinnati. White Bear will count on Colston and Jennings staying hot while the Robber Barons will rely on the consistent play of their runners, Frank Gore and Earnest Graham, who will play against each other in the NFL. Ultimately, this game figures to be won or lost at the bottom of the lineups where the Alley Cat coach will have to select from Holmes, Jones, Jones, Patten, and a couple of Lions receivers. The Minneapolis coach will counter with some combination of Ward, Rice, Engram, and Williams. Given their long history of getting the "right" medium-knocker receivers in the starting lineup, the Robber Barons would appear to have an advantage here. However, the Alley Cats have also proven to be fairly adept at that task this season.
