Good
Reading
Medallion Hunter's Resource
There's this annual search for a hidden medallion in the snow of St. Paul, Minnesota
each winter. It's really quite an amazing spectacle of old-time community spirit,
and it's been going since the 1950s. Your Whale Time host, G. Sax, has taken a
personal interest in his hometown's enigmatic event since 1996.
St.
Paul Real Estate Blog
Our real estate agent
knows her St. Paul well and regularly updates a nationally recognized blog. This
sort of thing is both good for residential real estate and for the city of St.
Paul. I like to think of myself as a St. Paul booster, so I share.
Tomato
Nation
Sarah D. Bunting has been telling fantastic stories in a fuckable voice since
well before the chic of blog. I wouldn't ever think of defining her site as a
blog because her tales tend to have a beginning, middle, and end. And because
she writes forever, not just in bloggy hiccups. Tomato Nation is now a bit more
stylized than the old green text on red-orange background, but it's still the
same Sarah. She is one of the few Internet personalities that deserves all the
success she can muster.
Skyscraper Page
The pureplay interactivity of this site is what makes it so much fun. The absolute
highlight are the Diagrams pages. Pick a city and wow to it. Skyscrapers
aren't as hyped as they used to be for obvious reason, but there are certainly
still some "Biggie" sized projects in the works around the world and even in the
home country.
Football
Whale Time Fantasy Football League
A premiere 16-team fantasy football keeper league founded in 1985; never has so
much effort been put into something so small; but, oh, what fun. Come in and look
at the best keeper league system you've ever encountered.
Ourlads' Scouting Services
A no-frills look at NFL pecking orders. The easy-to-read charts are crucial to
watching the progress of your fantasy football prospects. Like the difference
between first and second violin in a symphony, so much can be said without saying
anything. Just a simple name placed on a seating chart.
Baseball
Northern League Fan's Guide
If you're intrigued by independent minor league baseball, there is no better place
to begin investigating than at Bill Tyler's veteran site. You might be more interested
in this page if you're actually planning a trip to one of the localities that
host Northern League ball games, but the wealth of information can certainly be
appreciated on its own merit. Standings are updated everyday, team guides are
updated just about every year, and the vast array of collectibles such as pins,
cards, and schedules are scrubbed and presented as each item is gathered. There's
a world of goodies to explore, and Bill's been doing the online thing longer than
the league itself.
Radio
Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know?
With stovetop coffee firmly on the decline, the main man from Madison, Wisconsin
serves as your percolator on a Saturday morn with his patented quiz show and unique
flavor of Midwestern humor without being anything like that one guy from Minnesota
with all the books. Feldman consistently provides the quickest wit you'll find
on the radio.
Music
Pat McCurdy
Pat McCurdy is a bit of a cult hero in several towns in the Midwest, particularly
in his home base of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Far from a novelty act, Pat is an accomplished
musician that simply hasn't forgotten his sense of humor. He travels year-round
through a regular set of shows from Chicago up to Green Bay and over to Minneapolis,
and occassionally takes weeks from his already-busy schedule to try his luck in
the Mountain Time Zone or Down South. You may feel like an outsider the first
time you go to one of his shows, but it doesn't take long to feel like another
regular as Pat's welcoming, charismatic style draws you into his lively world.
Humor
Timothy McSweeney's
McSweeney's is a bare-bones site full of deeply hilarious work. Readers are drawn
into its unthreatening, wide-open spaces where the fresh oxygen makes for heartier
laughter. After a typical browsing, you'll want to buy books and go to readings.
This is the Web's "sturdy brown chair with tiny squeaky wheels."
The
Onion
A-duh. A bit more commercialized than it was before you had kids but still on
target most of the time and always prepared to take risks others shy away from.
