Medallion Main
Hiding List

1980s

St. Paul Pioneer Press Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt
1986 Clues

Found in Highland Park at about 3:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon by South Minneapolis boys, Peter Schow and Steve Gronoli, with the aid of a metal detector.

Clue 1
If you're searching for the regal bounty,
We suggest you start with Ramsey County;
And we're telling you now, just to be nice,
That it's not in a park with a palace of ice.
Gives the typical Ramsey County clue and eliminates Phalen Lake Park, where the famous 1986 ice palace was located, as a potential hiding place.

Clue 2
We'll surely admit
That it hides in a park,
But other than that,
You're still in the dark.
Simply states that the medallion is hidden in a public park.

Clue 3
Think of a cap
That you'll never wear.
It's made of steel
And already there.
The "cap made of steel" refers to a 2-inch pipe cap familiar to plumbers. When screwed together with a plug, this contraption makes an ideal place in which to hide something like, say, a medallion.

Clue 4
Having fun
And picnics, too.
This little hint
Can surely help you.
All that's given here is the nearly picnic tables — a little hesitation clue thrown in for good measure.

Clue 5
People travel
Through the air,
Without an engine
To keep them there.
A walkway that crosses Montreal Avenue is visible from the treasure site.

Clue 6
If you've pined away
For news of the treasure,
Here are some words
To ponder with pleasure.
Pine trees are located nearby. Another "hold your horses" clue if I ever saw one.

Clue 7
Kids by the hundreds
Followed this guy,
And this can help
If you'll really try.
Refers to the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Hamline Avenue is located nearby.

Clue 8
When the snow is gone
And you a low score,
You're near plenty of places
Where you can call "Fore!"
The use of "Fore!" should be channeling all energies toward parks with golf courses; in this case, Highland.

Clue 9
Come on laddies,
And lassies, too;
Have yourselves a fling.
Use your heads
And you'll get close
To the treasure of the king.
Refers to Scotland and the Highland Fling, a folk dance of that country.

Clue 10
Think of a guy
Whose nickname is Tony.
You're getting real close,
And that's no baloney.
Giving it away street by street, this clue refers to Antonio Drive.

Clue 11
Not too far away
From the treasure you seek,
There's a Canadian word
Your interest to pique.
Refers to nearby Montreal Avenue; Montreal is a city in Canada.

Clue 12
It's filled in now,
But it use to be
A fun-filled place
Where swimsuits you'd see.
Highland Park
Is where it's at —
Near the deserted pool
And that is that.
It's not exactly an "X" on the spot, but the hunt never got to this clue, so we'll never know how it stood up as the last clue of the lot.
